VAIO Signature Collection

When SonyStyle debuts new and or updated VAIOs, it is highly recommended to check out the special line of called VAIO Signature Collection as you as a buyer will be pleasantly surprised by rare and eye-catching offerings. In most cases you will witness hip and trendy VAIOs aimed to match your fashion-forward lifestyle as well as impress your friends around you. Due to the nature of this collection, it is usually a limited production, so act quickly before they disappear.

So what exactly Sony has launched this holiday season? VAIO X has come back in Gold, this VAIO when first introduced back last year was a huge hit and sold out real quickly, so due to the demand for that color you will be able to score one again and with current promotion you can even save $200. It’s an awesome notebook for those of us who like to travel light and enjoy the true beauty of engineering. Feel free to check out our unboxing video of its previous generation here.
Next in the line up is a VAIO P outfitted in Pink and Black crocodile and looks like a nice clutch. VAIO EA series with the black and gold Arabesque designs is something you have to check out in person. Very detailed pattern shows off really well in gold.

And of course there is an all powerful and intricate VAIO Z that has a few custom options that will blow you away in specifications and definitely bankrupt you for a couple of years. This season’s Carbon Fiber Z is one to consider with the premium specs including Full HD, Ci7 processor, a hybrid graphics card, BDRW, 512 GB SSD, 8 GB RAM and ships with Windows 7 Ultimate. Another thing to note is that a TPM chip is now included on all new Z’s. Pretty cool, all it is missing is a USB 3.0 slots but we’ll forgive them for now, as those will be widely available in 2011 line up on many VAIOs.  Your VAIO lid can be outfitted in Bordeaux Red (like VAIO TZ models back in 2009) and Infinite Stripes.
If you are into nice picture gallery viewing experience, check out the VAIO Z currently available in Japan.
Other Signature models include a Red Sangria Y series and a Gold VAIO J118 all-in-one touch screen computer.

In The

New VAIO Hybrid PC and VAIO Chrome

Sony has always been known for its ingenuity and amazing design in hardware but most of us may have noticed recently that we have not seen anything ground breaking and extraordinary from the company. Engadget recently unearthed some info about about the upcoming Sony tablet supposedly featuring PlayStation certification as a “full blown media and gaming tablet” , however Sony has some more goodies cooking in their kitchen as we speak.
So, there this interesting VAIO Hybrid PC and the reason why it is a hybrid is it consists of two components. Yes, there is an actual notebook that will be pretty thin, featuring Intel’s Light Peak technology which is what we know now as Thunderbolt, that same interface that current MacBooks Pro are sporting.
Just to tease you a little bit with the hardware specs, you will be presented with and Intel Wireless Display, SSD of hard drive flavor, i7 processor, no optical drive, HDMI output with 3D support, expect battery life to run from 8 to 16.5 hours and the thing should weigh around 1.13 kg.
Now the second component/unit that’s what will be unique to this VAIO when connected, it will provide:
  • Discrete GPU (AMD Whistler-XT with 1 GB VRAM)
  • Blu-ray disc (reader/writer) drive
  • HDMI Output
  • VGA Output
  • RJ45 Ethernet port
  • USB
  • weighing around 0.68kg
The connector is kind of funky and reminded me of VAIO DVD-RW i.Link plus power connector, only this time it looks like it’s gonna use USB and AC connection.
Overall the notebook looks pleasing to eyes, aesthetically designed in its VAIO fashion, however we are not quite sure about the purpose  of the second component. It again reminds me of a desktop model Sony marketed back in 2007 – VAIO RM series that featured a twin-unit form factor.
The next VAIO we unearthed is the VAIO with Chrome OS.
As Google is prepping its Chrome OS debut, Sony is hard at work to bring you their first VAIO pimped up in Google’s OS of course. Expect to see the following hardware specifications of this new PC:
  • Nvidia Tegra 2 (250) platform
  • 11.6″ (1366×768) LCD display
  • 1 GB of Memory
  • 16 GB eMMC (electronic multimedia card)
  • Ultra-low power GeForce GPU
  • Wireless WAN
  • Wide Keyboard (18mm) will be pretty similar to the Google Chrome Cr-48 laptop keyboard
  • Dimensions: less than an inch thick at around 19.9 mm; width is at 11.7″ (298 mm) and it is 21.5 cm (8.46″) deep
  • It should weigh around 2.2 lb (or 1kg)
  • 8 hour battery life
Features like Bluetooth and GPS will be enabled later on, so don’t expect those two right at launch in summer of 2011.
As far as the software department, you will love the Quick booting, Chrome OS auto-update will ensure you are always on top of new features and Sony will throw in some VAIO related software as well.
That is all for now guys, we will bring more info as it becomes available, sorry cannot post any actual pictures and I am not that great at drawings…Stay tuned though!

SONY VAIO L Series in CES

Sony VAIO SA and SB Series Details Pop up

Sony has not officially introduced the new line up of VAIO notebooks, however we have mentioned before and a chatter on the internets showed up some commotion about the upcoming VAIO SA/SB series. Like with other VAIO models, Sony is sticking with its alphabetic naming scheme (just look at the generations of E series that started with EA and currently at EF modification). So it was pretty much expected to see the S series VAIO evolve into newer updated line. So according to good lads and girls at notebookreview.com some European vendors have been spilling information about the SA/SB series. There is nothing totally groundbreaking, however the specs look pretty good and weight wise it is not bad at all. Looks wise, we think that the concept VAIOs that were introduced at CES very well might be the new SA/SB series.
SA series look to be more premium type offering Solid State drives, Intel i7 CPU, while SB series will feature i5 CPU and lowed end graphics. Here are a few examples of the upcoming models that surfaced in Europe:
SA Series:
VPC-SA1Z9E 13.3″/i7-2620M/8GB/256GB SSD/HD663M 1GB/WIN7PRO/1.46KG , 2.799,00
VPC-SA1X9E/XI Intel Core i7-2620M Processor, Windows 7 Professional 64bit, 4GB DDR3 SDRAM Memory, 128GB Dual SSD (RAID 0), 13.3″ WXGA++ (1600×900) VAIO Display Plus, AMD Radeon HD 6630M + Intel HD Graphics 1GB, DVD SuperMulti Drive, HDMI, 802.11a/b/g/n £1,570.97
SB Series:
VPC-SB1X9E 13.3″/i5-2410M/4GB/500GB/HD6470M 512MB/WIN7PRO/1.69KG, 1.099,00
VPC-SB1V9E/B Intel Core i5-2410M Processor, Windows 7 Professional 64bit, 4GB DDR3 SDRAM Memory, 500GB 5400rpm Hard Drive, 13.3″ 1366×768 WXGA, AMD Radeon HD 6470M + Intel HD Graphics 512MB, DVD SuperMulti Drive, HDMI, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, WebCam, Backlit Keyboard will run around £945.41
As you can see, it is quite a mix of great specs, though we don’t see a Bluray drive as an option yet or USB 3.0 ports mentioning, we are sure those will be available as a customization Build Your Own VAIO type deal.

Sony Vaio Hybrid and Slate tablet concepts showcase new form factors, flexible materials

Black, bezeled and rectangular? That's pretty much the go-to design for tablets nowadays. But lately Sony's been straying from the pack and taking a different aesthetic tack, which it recently showcased with the Tablet S and P. On the showroom floor at CES, however, the company had two newer models secured behind glass to give consumers a sense of future form factors. These prototypes -- known prospectively as the Hybrid and Slate -- fall under the Vaio brand and clearly highlight an exciting direction for the Japanese electronics giant's impending offerings.

The Hybrid's most distinctive feature is its marriage of laptop functionality with tablet portability. Sliding the unit up and locking it into place reveals a keyboard in front (shown with a dedicated Windows button) and an expansive speaker grill behind. The company wouldn't elaborate on the materials used in the enclosure, but that sparkly, copper color manages to toe the line between cheap and space age -- a definite contradiction, for sure. At the base of the 11-inch unit is a dock that fits an included stylus, as this tablet is being designed to support touch pen input, in addition to the typical capacitive touch. None of the ports on the device are final, but when and if it ever ships, you can expect the usual array.

For a true glimpse into the next generation of tablet manufacturing, you need only look to Sony's tablet Slate -- the real stunner of this conceptual duo. With its use of a smart, soft touch flexible material -- the company refused to elaborate on just what -- that extends from the unit's back for easy table top mounting, it's easy to see a product like this setting consumers' interest on fire and nabbing that lust-worthy tech crown. Unfortunately, this particular scifi casing is more than likely a few years off, but it's good to see the company innovating and attempting to break free from the shackles of ordinary builds. The Slate is also designed to work with a wireless keyboard that shares the same intelligent material and appears to incorporate a touch interface. Click on through the galleries below for a tour of these two proof of concepts and make sure to click on past the break for a brief video tour

New VAIO Neon C Series May Blind You

Yes, you heard it, Sony decided to go all out and bring some smashing neon colors to  your life, that of course if you bring one of their VAIO CA or CB series home. The exclusive colors will be represented in neon green as well as neon orange with 14 inch and 15.5 inch LED widescreen displays. I guess the VAIO P that came in similar coats did not attract that needed attention, so the bigger size and more neon color would definitely blow your fellow Starbucks coffee junkies away. Sony did not stop at just that, expect to see light radiating around the edges of the laptop, through the VAIO logo, and even around the touchpad emitting a beautiful glow, add to this the lit keyboard and you got a Tron-like visual effects in a dark room.
On the software side, the future users of these models will be greeted with the Sony Imagination Studioâ„¢ Suite VAIO® Edition combines five powerful Sony® applications for easily enhancing and sharing your music, photos, and movies. Turn your video shoots into Hollywood-style movies with Vegasâ„¢ Movie Studio HD Platinum. Make your own original music tracks or create remixes and mash-ups of your favorite songs with Acidâ„¢ Music Studio.  And of course you can burn your videos to DVD or Blu-ray Discâ„¢ media (select models) to share with your family and friends.

The New VAIO S

SonyStyle is taking pre-orders and will let you customize the model by maximizing it and pimping it out with the latest and greatest. We’d say this model will definitely throw some punches against the new Macs and HPs you may see on the market. We customized to the max and ended up with a pretty nice configuration for $2269 with the following:
  • Intel® Coreâ„¢ i7-2620M processor (2.70GHz) with Turbo Boost up to 3.40GHz
  • Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-bit
  • White Color
  • AMD Radeonâ„¢ 6630M GPU (1GB VRAM)
  • 256GB (128GBx2) Solid State Drive with RAID 0 Technology
  • 8GB (4GBx2) DDR3-SDRAM-1333
  • 13.3″ VAIO Display with LED backlight (1366 x 768)
  • Blu-ray Discâ„¢  Drive
  • Large Capacity Sheet Battery
The notebook looked solid and made of magnesium casing, is pretty light at about 3.8 pounds, features a USB 3.0 port and compatibility with Intel Wireless Display (anyone actually uses it?) The above configuration comes with that Sheet battery that will double the notebook’s life and will actually discharge first before getting any juice from the notebook embedded battery life. So this thing will last for a while if you are flying coach JFK to Tokyo.
It’s a great addition to the extended VAIO family line up, and we’ll shed some more light on it once we get one to play with. For now check out this video made by Sony’s SGNL.

Installing SSD on system

1) The Crucial Drive should work without issue in the Sony laptop, the M4 is a fast drive and will make that fast machine even faster.
The Sony may or may not support SATA III (6GBps) but if not, the drive will step down to SATA II (3GBps) and still be lightning fast.

2) In every case of installing SSDs in systems, they were all recognized properly by the system BIOS, some required BIOS tweaks in the settings for the correct drive mode, Windows 7 has all of the drivers you need built right in, there are forums (referenced below) where you can find very helpful guides to installing and optimizing Windows 7 on and SSD. Every machine has its idiosyncrasies with respect to getting an SSD installed and optimized. You will need to find a user group of folks with the same or similar model machines as your own to really get the scoop on the details.

3) I have read in many places that cloning a drive with platters to an SSD is not always a good idea. It will not hurt anything so you could certainly try it, but you may not get the performance you expect because the cloned image may not be proprly "aligned" on the SSD, some cloning software is supposed to be designed to ensure the clone is properly aligned. Installing Windows fresh on the new drive is the optimal method most people use, this sets windows in specific modes with the correct drivers to best handle running from an SSD.

Be patient, in all three cases where I performed this task, it took time to locate the right information and to perform the build, install the apps, and tweak the system for best performance. Once you get it running right, it will fly.

Introducing VAIO

VAIO is a sub-brand used for many of Sony's computer products. Originally an acronym of Video Audio Integrated Operation, this was amended to Visual Audio Intelligent Organizer in 2008 to celebrate the brand's 10th anniversary. The branding was created by Timothy Healy to distinguish items that integrate consumer audio and video with conventional computing products, such as the Sony VAIO W Series personal computer, which functioned as a regular computer and a miniature entertainment center. Although Sony made computers in the 1980's exclusively for the local (Japan) market, the company withdrew from the computer business around the turn of the decade. Sony's re-entry to the global computer market under the new VAIO brand, began in 1996 with the PCV series of desktops. The VAIO logo also represents the integration of analog and digital technology with the 'VA' representing an analog wave and the 'IO' representing a digital binary code.
